I grew up in Manitou Springs, Colorado. My family and I had The Dulcimer Shop there for 41 years. The dulcimers were handmade in our shop. My particular instrument, which was a birthday present when I was 22, was made by W.D. Dever. My mom did the inlay work, and we had a somewhat transient guy who came through many years ago and carved the eagle head. This instrument has been through an awful lot.
I moved up here this last September. My girlfriend and I started engaging in an inter-city relationship. We were doing well, and she said, “I’m a little tired of doing this drive, and I’d like to see you more, perhaps you should look at coming up here.” I said, “Looks like I’m moving.”
She is a researcher and a scientist, and she has gotten me into probiotics and probiotic food. We cook a lot, we make our own sauerkraut, we make our own water kefir, and that’s been an absolute blast. I even make my own soda pop.
I work at Natural Grocers. I enjoy working there, and I’m very grateful to have this job. It’s an environment where we get to provide food that is nutritious for the community at large. Natural Grocers offers monthly training where we get to learn about nutrients and things.
Electric dulcimers and classic scooters
I play the dulcimer and the Chapman Stick. The Stick is fundamentally the polar opposite of the dulcimer, which is why it’s nice. I play festivals, I play weddings, I play memorial services, I play out in the bars. I just like to play music. I would like to find some people who I could start jamming out with. I tend to be a musician who tries to flow with who I’m playing with as opposed to trying to dominate. Since I play the dulcimer electrically and I can add effects, I’ve gone and played open mic nights where I’ve played stuff like Slayer and Motorhead, and all kinds of stuff you would never in your life have expected to hear on the dulcimer.
My other hobby is that I ride classic motor scooters, Vespa and Lambretta scooters. We ride our bikes, wrench on them, hang out in the garage. We go out and have a really good time, a lot of riding, a lot of camaraderie. I’ve done it for 23 years.
If I were a vegetable ...
I would be a nice salted head of cabbage so I could turn myself into the best kraut that a person would want to eat.
