A 12-year-old girl from Highlands Ranch died in a boating accident the morning of July 17 in Newfound Lake in New Hampshire, according to a news release from the New Hampshire State Police.
Zoe Anderson was learning to slalom ski behind a 20-foot Cobalt powerboat operated by her father, Sherwood Anderson. Also aboard the boat were her mother and 14-year-old sister, according to the release. After Zoe Anderson fell, her father was in the process of returning to her location when he became momentarily distracted when his hat was blown off his head, the release says.
Sherwood Anderson placed the boat in neutral and moving at slow speeds, it traveled over Anderson, causing serious injuries to her torso, the release says. She was assisted from the water and immediately transported to shore by her family. According to the release, CPR was initiated but efforts to revive her were not successful.
Drugs or alcohol did not play a part in the accident, according to Sgt. Joshua Dirth, of New Hampshire State Police Marine Patrol, and there are no plans to pursue a criminal investigation.
"An incident like this tugs at everyone's heart strings," Dirth said. "It's obviously a traumatic event for everyone involved and our hearts go out to all of the family members involved."
The Andersons were visiting family in the area, Dirth said.
A friend and classmate of Zoe Anderson describes her as an animal lover, a girl who was always laughing and a great friend.
"I never once saw her sad," said Chloe Jensen, a student at Rocky Heights Middle School. "She was loved by many, many people, including me."
In support of the Anderson family, a GoFundMe page has been created at gofundme.com/AndersonFamilyUSAPCO.
