On Campus: Castle Rock

Castle View

• The boys and girls basketball teams play crosstown rival Douglas County on Feb. 9 in a doubleheader at Castle View. Both Sabercats teams are 7-2 in the all-time series against the Huskies and the boys have won three of the past four games against County. The girls have won seven straight contests in the rivalry.

• Fourth place in the Highlands Conference will be at stake when the hockey team faces Crested Butte in back-to-back games on Feb. 9 and 10. Castle View is 8-5-0 in league play and Crested Butte is 8-4-1.

Douglas County

• Kaden Campbell, Tristan Kelly and Sarah Sams won titles at the girls state championship wrestling meet Feb. 3 at Thornton High School. It was not a CHSAA sanctioned tournament. Campbell won a 20-4 technical fall over Nanen Agular of Limon in the 136-pound title match. Kelly pinned Bella Mitchell in 1:30 to win the 161-pound championship and Sams won a 10-6 decision over Denver South’s Marietou Atore at 185 pounds.

• Sharp free throw shooting helped the boys basketball team defeat Ponderosa 82-45 on Feb. 2.

The Huskies led 49-20 at halftime and wound up outscoring the Mustangs 29-4 from the foul line. Junior Earl Boykins was 12-for-12 from the foul line.

Rock Canyon

• Girls basketball coach Becky Mudd came up for an idea to urge her players to engage with the community. The Jaguars’ game against Legend on Feb. 6 was designed as the Small Actions-Big Impact game. Each player selected a cause, person, family or group and played the game in honor of that person/group. The girls were committed to do a small action for the person/cause they selected. This small action could be a note of encouragement, a donation, time in community service or sharing awareness for the person/group selected.

• The girls swim team won the Continental League A championships held Feb. 3 with 577 points to outdistance second-place Heritage. Junior Jessica Beckwith was crowned the champion of the 100 butterfly with a winning time of 57.42.

Valor Christian

• Coach George Gwozdecky’s hockey team has clinched the Highlands Conference title with a 15-0-0 record and 30 points with one game remaining against last place Woodland Park on Feb. 9. The Eagles, 16-1-0 overall, finish the regular season on Feb. 10 with a non-conference game against Monarch, which is 13-1-0 this season.

• The girls basketball team is hanging around in the Jeffco 4A title race and is a game behind league leading and defending state champion Evergreen. The Eagles travel to Evergreen to face the Cougars on Feb. 13. Evergreen whipped Valor, 52-33, earlier this season.
