Since Lone Tree's founders began discussing building a city, meeting in each other's basements and around kitchen tables, having a community gathering place was top of mind.
The Lone Tree Arts Center, opened in 2011, filled that void, and the city is beginning to see a use for it as an events center, more than just art exhibits and ballets. As the city celebrates its 25th year since incorporation, Lone Tree Mayor Jackie Millet said, looking around the arts center Feb. 8 with dozens of kids playing and parents mingling, this was the plan from the start.
“It speaks to the building of community in the City of Lone Tree, which was the vision of some of those early leaders,” Millet said. “To have this facility here today, to have a place for people to gather was part of that original vision. This space had never been quite used this way, but we're hoping it's the first of many.”
The City of Lone Tree will be celebrating the 25th anniversary of incorporation throughout 2020. The city will host a series of events and projects to commemorate the past quarter century.
The city hosted a birthday bash at the Lone Tree Arts Center Feb. 8. Kids came to play games and catch a screening of the No. 1 movie from 1995, the year Lone Tree became incorporated, "Toy Story."
As part of the festivities, kids dressed up as their favorite "Toy Story" characters for a costume contest.
The city will be rolling out a mural project through the Lone Tree Arts Commission as part of its festivities. Lone Tree was officially incorporated in November 1995.
