Douglas County School District plans to name new superintendent in May

School board approves timeline that starts with picking a search firm

The Douglas County School Board has approved a timeline for selecting the district's next superintendent, aiming to have the process wrapped up in May.

The board approved the plan as part of its consent agenda, a group of items passed in a single vote, during its Dec. 10 meeting.

The timeline kicks off this month, with the selection of a search firm and the planning of community engagement efforts throughout December and January.

The district will take up a survey of staff and community members in February to develop a “leadership profile.” The district will also gather focus groups of administrators, staff, students, parents and community members before finalizing the “superintendent profile” and job application.

The district will spend March promoting the position and recruiting candidates. In April, it will screen candidates, interview top candidates and select a finalist or finalists.

The process is slated to finish in May. The finalist or finalists will interview with constituents and stakeholder panels, hold open forum community meetings and undergo interviews with the board before the new superintendent is selected.

Thomas Tucker resigned as superintendent in September, citing personal and family reasons while also under investigation for allegations of workplace discrimination, although he was cleared of any policy violations.

Longtime district employee and cabinet member Corey Wise is serving as interim superintendent.
