Taylor Griffin is a perfect fit for the Douglas County High School softball team this season.
She is a senior shortstop with three seasons of experience, studies the game and has the softball intelligence that is needed on a young Douglas County team with four freshman, three sophomores, three juniors and three seniors on the roster.
“I first started playing baseball, so I was with boys a lot and I was really competitive,” said Griffin, who is also a standout for the Huskies girls basketball team. “My smarts on the field, I've learned from my coaches and all my teammates and how they push me.
“You are always learning, especially high school because we get a new group of girls coming in every single year and you have to find out how they play and they have to find out how I play. We're still learning that. I try my best to be a leader but these girls are so competitive and they all love to play. The only thing for us is we need to find our rhythm for the younger girls.”
After 12 games, Griffin was hitting .558 with 13 runs batted in and two home runs. She had struck out only twice in 45 plate appearances.
"She is very skilled and a good leader of the team. Fundamentally she is very sound and lately she's been really, really good hitting the ball."
Dane Craig, Douglas County softball coach
Q&A with Griffin
Who is your favorite athlete and why?
My favorites have always been Tim Tebow and Todd Helton. I just look up to them, especially Tim Tebow. He incorporates more than just the sport. He incorporates his teammates, Christ and all of the above. And he plays multiple sports.
What or who motivates you most to excel in sports?
My grandpa (Sam Houston). He coached my mom (Jessica Griffin) forever and he is just a sweetheart and knows exactly what he is talking about.
What are your plans after high school?
I have not decided where I want to go to school yet. But I know I am going to be playing four years of softball and try to study in social education.
What is your toughest play as a shortstop?
It is usually when there is a lefty slappy up to bat and I'm trying to figure out where I want to be standing if there is a runner on first. When they hit a little dribbler to me and they are already 10 steps out of the box, it is the hardest for me trying to get them out at first.
Do you change your approach at bat when you are down two strikes?
When I have two strikes on me, I look for contact. The worst thing to do with two strikes on you and a runner on second is strike out or pop out.
