I'm the president of the newly formed Castle Rock Artist Cooperative. I am a local fine art photographer and graphic designer based in Castle Rock, where I've been for the last five and a half years. One of the first things I did when I moved here was to join the Greater Castle Rock Art Guild, which has since gone away. CRAC aims to pick up where GCRAG left off, except there will be no brick-and-mortar gallery space. There will be pop-up art shows and events at local businesses around Castle Rock, and we will leverage the power of social media and web to bring art to consumers in our community.
CRAC got off the ground in the summer of last year and has since obtained official 501(c)(3) status, so we're completely legit! Since then, we have been working with the Downtown Alliance (DDA/DMA) on bringing murals to downtown Castle Rock, the first being painted on the side of the SmarterChaos building on Third Street. We're also working with the Downtown Alliance on a tree stump sculpture in Festival Park.
I believe we will finally help give Castle Rock the art scene it deserves. Artists need a voice, and we need to help artists bring their work to market.
We are currently in the phase of getting the organization off the ground and signing people up for memberships. If you'd like to join, you can visit castlerockartcoop.com/join and fill out the online form. Stay tuned for updates on artist meetings and meetups, pop-up shows, public art opportunities and more.
Here's what I live by when it comes to art — I make art for myself. If someone wants to join me on my journey, they're more than welcome. But at the end of the day, I do art for one person, and that's me.
