Q&A with Matt Katona, candidate for Castle Rock Town Council, District 6

Campaign website: mattkatona.com

What makes you the best choice for this office?

I have a proven track record of financial discipline and genuine concern for community. As a director on the Crystal Valley Metro District, we refinanced the infrastructure debt and reduced costs by over $6 million. The reduction of debt will allow lowering of the annual metro tax for all Crystal Valley real estate owners. I am also extremely active in the Crystal Valley homeowners association as a delegate and known as a problem solver who never turns a deaf ear to neighbors in our 1,700-plus house community.

If you're elected, what issue will be at the top of your agenda?

The only agenda item I have is to continue providing excellent customer service to the citizens of Castle Rock. I will continue to listen to all residents across of all walks of life, look adversity in the eye, and together we will endeavor to persevere during these colorful and uncertain times.

If you're elected, what must you accomplish in order for you to consider your term a success?

A successful milestone would be to streamline town-provided services and hard nose question budgetary line items in a continuing effort of looking for new angles to allow the residents of Castle Rock to retain more of their hard-earned money.

If elected, how would you continue work to help small local businesses recover from COVID-19?

Small businesses are the heart and soul of Caste Rock and I will champion a cause to reduce the 4% town tax of all locally owned businesses who have documented impact by COVID-19. There are two things I put in my pocket every time I leave the house — a pistol and a mask and pray to God I never have to pull either out. I will work tirelessly to assist in the normal return of the Castle Rock local economy from petitioning the governor to permit local opt out of mask mandates and allow dining establishments a full return of building occupancy.

What do you believe is the best way for Castle Rock to manage growth and development in coming years?

Castle Rock is geographically situated to attract large and unique commercial establishments. We should focus on developing destination businesses in the likeness of the outlets. Likewise, we should reduce the amount of multi-dwelling units which quickly produce a dense population.
