I AM RUNNING FOR THIS OFFICE BECAUSE:
My name is Rebecca McClellan and I have served the 6th Congressional District on the State Board of Education since 2017. I am asking for your vote to continue working for academic excellence and opportunity for all Colorado students.
As a board legislative liaison, I worked to help pass the bipartisan full day kindergarten bill. When I noticed that on-time graduation rates were being negatively impacted for districts offering the ASCENT program, I reached out to a local legislator who ran a bill to fix that. Now the program is being expanded to benefit more high school students with extra time to earn marketable qualifications and college credits through community colleges while benefiting our communities in need of a well-prepared and qualified workforce.
Working with parent advocates, I've supported the implementation of the bipartisan READ Act, so more students can benefit from evidence-based literacy instruction, including students with dyslexia. I'm pleased to have successfully advocated prioritizing ESSER funds for proven strategies like high-impact tutoring to accelerate academic growth and boost achievement.
I support Colorado's local control over textbooks and curriculum, and I support broad Colorado Academic Standards that include the contributions made by members of diverse groups. Preparing students for college or career should include a variety of opportunities, including college preparation, concurrent enrollment opportunities, career and technical education and apprenticeships, and STEM and STEAM opportunities.
