There will be five teams from south metro schools that will be competing in the girls state volleyball tournaments.

The single elimination state tournament will be May 7-8 at the Broadmoor World Arena in Colorado Springs.

Mountain Vista won the Region 1 tournament on May 1 with wins over Horizon and Pine Creek to make the eight-team, Class 5A bracket as the top-seeded team.

The Golden Eagles will be joined in Colorado Springs by Region 5 champ Cherry Creek, Legend who which downed Lakewood and Cherokee Trail to capture the Region 6 title and Region 7 winner Grandview. The Wolves downed Chaparral en route to the regional championship.

Mountain Vista (15-0) will face Grandview (11-4) in the opening game at 8 a.m. on May 7 when all first round games will be played.

Fourth-seeded Columbine (12-1) will play No. 5 Cherry Creek (15-1) at 11 a.m. in the opening round while seventh-seeded Legend (10-3) has a 5 p.m. game scheduled against No. 2 Rampart (10-1).

In regional action, Legend downed Cherokee Trail,15-10, in the deciding set of its 3-2 victory. Rylie Kadel had 17 kills, six blocks and 13 digs in the match while Payton Dunn contributed 50 assists.

In Class 3A, Lutheran won the crown in Region 8 to earn a ticket to the state championships and the sixth-seeded Lions (11-3) has an 8 p.m. first round match set against No 3 Sterling (14-2).
